How to Declutter and Clean Out Your Calgary Garage

By Cole, Legacy Junk Removal · March 2025 · 6 min read

The garage is one of those spaces that accumulates years of stuff without you ever really noticing — until one day you can barely get the car in. If you're a Calgary homeowner staring down a packed garage and wondering where to start, this guide will walk you through the whole process step by step.

Before You Start — A Few Calgary-Specific Things To Know

Calgary has some useful resources for getting rid of garage junk responsibly. The City of Calgary accepts electronics, tires, household hazardous waste and clothing for free at designated drop-off sites. Knowing this ahead of time means you can sort as you go rather than dumping everything at the landfill and paying more than you need to.

Calgary tip: Spring and fall are the best times to do a garage cleanout. The weather cooperates, donation centres are actively looking for items, and you can work with the garage door open without freezing.

The Step by Step Garage Cleanout Process

1

Clear everything out onto the driveway

Pull everything out of the garage completely. Yes, everything. This is the only way to see what you actually have and to clean the floor properly. Block off a morning or a full day depending on how packed it is.

2

Sort into four piles

Keep, Donate, Sell and Trash. Be ruthless — if you haven't used something in two years and you don't have a specific plan to use it, it goes in donate or trash. The keep pile should be smaller than you think.

3

Deal with the donate pile first

Contact Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill or the Salvation Army for larger items. Post smaller items in your local Calgary Buy Nothing Facebook group. Getting the donate pile off your driveway quickly keeps momentum going.

4

Handle hazardous materials separately

Old paint, chemicals, batteries, motor oil and fluorescent bulbs cannot go in regular garbage. The City of Calgary has free Household Hazardous Waste drop-off at Throw 'n' Go locations — check calgary.ca for current locations and hours.

5

Clean the garage floor

With everything out this is your chance to sweep, degrease and if needed seal the floor. A clean floor makes the whole garage feel bigger and more usable.

6

Put back only what you're keeping — organized

Group items by category — automotive, seasonal, sports, tools. Use wall storage and ceiling racks to maximize floor space. Label everything. The goal is to be able to find anything in under 30 seconds.

7

Haul the rest away

What's left in the trash pile needs to go. For small amounts the City of Calgary landfill accepts drop-offs. For larger volumes — especially if you have furniture, appliances or renovation debris mixed in — hiring a junk removal company is faster and often cheaper than multiple landfill trips.

What to Do With Common Garage Items in Calgary

Old tires

The City of Calgary accepts up to four tires per visit for free at Throw 'n' Go locations. Your tire shop may also take old tires when you buy new ones.

Old appliances

Working appliances can be donated to Habitat ReStore or the Salvation Army. Non-working appliances go to the landfill — note that fridges, freezers and AC units have a $17 refrigerant surcharge at the City of Calgary facility.

Electronics

TVs, computers, monitors and other electronics are accepted for free at Calgary's Throw 'n' Go locations. Never put electronics in regular garbage.

Paint

Unopened or partially used paint in good condition can be donated. Old or dried paint goes to Household Hazardous Waste drop-off — never in regular garbage.

When to Just Call a Junk Removal Company

If your garage cleanout involves more than a truckload of stuff, a mix of large items, or you simply don't have the time or vehicle to make multiple landfill runs, hiring a junk removal company is often the most efficient option. A good crew can clear a garage in a couple of hours, sort for donation as they go, and haul everything away in one trip.
